Kingston Daily British Whig 29 August 1879

Collision
Part of a Mixed Train Runs into a Freight
Iroquois, Aug. 28.- While the down mixed train No. 7 was approaching the Grand Trunk station at this place, about noon to-day, coming down a steep grade, the engine and four cars became detached from the rest of the train, and, rushing through the yard, collided with No. 12 up freight train, which was standing about half way inside the switch taking water at the eastern tank. The engine was reversed, but could not be stopped. Fortunately no one was injured, the engineer and fireman having jumped from the engine opposite the freight office. Three loaded cars were thrown from the track on their sides into the ditch, and were badly damaged. The auxiliary car was brought from Brockville and the track cleared in a short time. The up express No. 2 was detained at Morrisburg about three hours.

As the mixed train coming east was descending the grade about two miles west of Iroquois, a coupling gave way and let the engine and part of the train go rushing down and run into a freight train going west, just entering the switch, knocking three cars into the ditch and badly damaging the engine of the mixed train. The driver and fireman jumped from the engine when they saw they could not stop in time to prevent a collision. No one hurt.
