Cumberland Railway and Coal Company, Published 9 October 1957 Among
the 40 different railways I have ridden in Canada is the Cumberland
Railway and Coal Company. It is the only rsilwsy that ever ran a
private train for me. After a brief visit to the lively town of
SpringhilL I boarded a local with oil lamps and a potbellied stove, and
rode in solitary splendor down to board the Ocean Limited at Sprlnghill
Junction. The CR. and C hasn't made money for 13 years, and handles
only five passengers a year , on average. It has one engine, one box
car and one passenger car. It has had only one collision and six
casualties in 80 years. It carries a crew of five, by law. Now the long
suffering Cumberland Railway and Coal wants to give up, and abandon the
line. I shall always treasure the memory of the time they put on a
special train for my benefit. The while (sic) line from Parrsboro to
Sprlnghill Junction is 32 mile |
