A Romantic Excursion To Delightful Galway, Published 29 May 1957 GALWAY
Delayed It seems to me that anywhere you go in Ireland, you enjoy
yourself. This is particularly true if you catch the morning train to
Galway. The train started off bravely enough, as do all Irish trains in
this Land of No Ulcers, but seemingly an Irish locomotive can no more
pass a junction without stopping than than can a habitual drunk walk
past a bar. So we stopped at Mullingar for eight minutes. we gave
Athlone 13 minutes of our time. and we passed two minutes at Attymon
Junction. Then, within nine minute, we were giving Athenry a full six
minutes before finally heading for Galway. I got off at Athlone and asked the porter where the traditional Tumble Down Shack was. He forced a wan smile and said there was a song "a long time ago" about such a shack. But, he assured me, this was the hometown of the famous Irish tenor, John McCormack. - - - |
