What About It Marc? Has The CPR No Piety? Published 12 January 1950 The
affinity between churches and train bells continues. I have just
learned from Rev. A. E. L. Caulfeild, rector of the Church of the
Ascension, that St. John's Anglican Church, Merivale, also has a train
bell to call the faithful to worship. That's the second time the
Canadian National has scored. (Aside to Marc McNeil, of the Canadian
Pacific; is there no piety in Windsor Station at all?)I had heard about this bell, and several people undertook to track down the story. Finally, when these did not come through, I picked up the phone and called Mr. Caulfeild, who was said to know the facts. The Ascension rector said that once upon a time, he was curate at St. John's, Merivale. That is how he came to know about the bell. Thinking it might be a long and involved affair, I said: "How did the church get the bell?" "Why" replied Mr. Calfeild, "I wrote the CNR, asked them for a bell, and they sent me one." It was as easy as that." |
