December 1963

In which I continue work as a Management Trainee on British Railways.

Friday 4 December
I went down with Brian Ward this evening to spend the weekend at his home in Warmley, Gloucestershire.  Madeline made me very welcome.

Saturday 5 December
This morning we went into Keynsham to do some shopping and in the afternoon went for a short trip into Bath on the Somerset and Dorset line, behind a Standard 2-6-2 tank.

Sunday 6 December
Today was frosty with a little fog.  Brian and I followed the track of an ancient tramway which goes down to the canal.  This would be the Avon and Gloucester Railway from Rodway Hill to the river Avon at Bitton, near Keynsham (Dendy Marshall p. 69).  The two lines of stone blocks which were set in the ground to hold the rails were still in evidence at one part.  The two holes drilled into each stone to secure the chairs were clearly visible.
I returned to Reading this evening.

Sunday 15 December
I came home this weekend. I had a quick visit to Dave Geldard's to show him a small collection of tickets which I have bought. Dave Tyler came down on Saturday, the first time I have seen him for about 9 months. He also brought down Peter Holgate whom I haven't seen for over 5 years, since you left Eltham at the end of the upper fifth.
