10 May 1887 - Canada Atlantic freight train derailed at Vars, causing delay to passenger train, no injuries An accident which might have been of a serious nature but in which, fortunately, no loss of life occurred, took place on the Canada Atlantic line yesterday about twenty miles from the city. The New York Express, due here at 10.30 a.m. was flagged to stop, a freight train consisting of forty-one cars being in front. This train had run into a hand car, the engine going off the line and being buried deep in the ditch. A general smash-up of the freight cars was the result, the engineer and fireman having a miraculous escape and being uninjured although much shaken. The passengers on the express were delayed nearly four hours awaiting a train from the city. The damage to the freight cars is considerable and it will take some time to remove the wreck. |
